Portuguese Podengo Pequeno
AKC Hound Group
Origin & History
The Portuguese Podengo Pequeno is an ancient breed dating back to the 5th century, brought to Portugal by Phoenician and Roman traders. As the smallest of Portugal's three Podengo sizes (Grande, Medio, and Pequeno), these little hunters were bred to flush rabbits from dense brush in Portugal's rugged terrain.
Their name "Podengo" comes from the Portuguese word for "rabbit hunter," and "Pequeno" means small. These primitive dogs developed naturally over centuries, with their erect ears and wedge-shaped head helping them locate prey.
They remain Portugal's national dog and are still used for hunting today.
Despite their hunting heritage, Portuguese Podengo Pequenos make lively, affectionate companions, valued for their intelligence and cheerful personality.
