Belgian Laekenois
AKC & CKC Herding Group
Origin & History
The Belgian Laekenois is the rarest of the four Belgian Shepherd varieties. The four Belgian Shepherds are the Belgian Malinois, the Belgian Tervuren, the Belgian Sheepdog (Groenendael), & the Belgian Laekenois.
The Laekenois is named after the Laeken region near Brussels where they were developed.
Originally used to guard linen drying in fields (hence "Laekenois"), These wire-coated herding dogs date back to the late 19th century when Belgian shepherds were being standardized. They later served as messenger dogs in both World Wars. While the other Belgian Shepherd varieties became more popular, the Laekenois remained relatively uncommon outside Belgium.
Today, Laekenois are valued as versatile working dogs in police/military work, search and rescue, and competitive dog sports, while also being loyal family companions.
