Belgian Tervuren
AKC & CKC Herding Group
Origin & History
The Belgian Tervuren is one of four varieties of Belgian Shepherd dogs. The four Belgian Shepherds are the Belgian Malinois, the Belgian Tervuren, the Belgian Sheepdog (Groenendael), & the Belgian Laekenois
Named after the Belgian village of Tervuren where they were first bred, these dogs were originally used as herders and farm guardians in Belgium.
Along with the Malinois, Laekenois, and Groenendael, the Tervuren shares common ancestry but was selectively bred for its distinctive long, mahogany-colored coat with black overlay. The breed gained recognition as a separate variety in the United States in 1959.
Today, while still capable of herding dogs, Tervurens excel in various dog sports, police work, and as loyal family companions known for their intelligence and elegance.
