Origin & History

The Entlebucher Mountain Dog is the smallest of the four Swiss mountain dog breeds, originating in the Entlebuch valley of Switzerland. The four breeds are the Appenzeller Sennenhund, Bernese Mountain Dog, Greater Swiss Mountain Dog, & Entlebucher Mountain Dog.

The Entlebucher was developed as an all-purpose farm dog. These energetic canines were bred to herd cattle, guard property, and pull carts.

Their name comes from the Entlebuch region where they were first documented in 1889. Nearly extinct after World War I, the breed was revived by Swiss enthusiasts and recognized by the AKC in 2011.

Today, Entlebuchers serve as versatile working dogs and active companions, valued for their intelligence, loyalty, and striking tricolor coat.
